Information on Mastitis:

 Mastitis is an infection of the mammary gland. The most common organisms involved are those of the skin; bacteria can gain entrance from a scratch or a puncture wound in the skin. As puppies nurse and pull on the teats, environmental bacteria can gain entry to the mammary gland. 

Mastitis occurs in all ages and sizes. It most commonly occurs when a female gives birth, and can occur from day one to six weeks postpartum, and occasionally during false pregnancy. The female becomes lethargic, may neglect pups and refuse to eat. A fever is usually present. One or more of the glands may be involved; the infected mammary glands are firm red and warm to the touch. The milk from the glands are often blood tinged, thick, yellow, or brownish. The milk of an infected breast is of poor nutritional quality, and puppies usually refuse to nurse from these teats. 

The occasional female or line of dogs develops mastitis at every lactation, presumably because some feature of their mammary glands or teats allow bacterial invasion more readily. An antibiotic therapy is usually instituted under veterinarian supervision. Routine measures include antibiotics, the application of warm compresses for 30 minutes three times a day and gentle stripping of the infected gland to express the milk. Early treatment may prevent abscess.
